Bombay, Shanghai, Delhi, Beijing, New York, London, Los Angeles, Tokyo are some of the most populated cities on earth. It turns out living in these sorts of places may be really bad for your long term brain health. A new study out of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California indicates that smog may speed the development of atherosclerosis.
Nino Kuenzil, an associate professor of preventative medicine at USC notes: “If confirmed, the public-health relevance would be enormous. Atherosclerosis plays a major role in a broad array of diseases, and almost everybody is regularly exposed to ambient air pollution, 24 hours a day, over a lifetime.”
As I’ve commented on in several earlier posts, the ability of your brain to function well is critically dependent on its blood supply. The better the blood supply, the better your brain will function as you get older. Since atherosclerosis cripples the blood supply to the brain, avoiding atherosclerosis is incredibly important when it comes to maintaining brain power.

Thanks alot SmartKit for your so educative articles.I actually have been missing such pieces of iformation.
My name is Jastins Gondwe.I am a Biomedical Laboratory Technologist who is currently based in South Africa.Am actually from Malawi.
My main concern is on environmental polution.I can see that with increasing population growth and industrial grow we will soon be having massive polution in the near future. Now my suggestion is can’t these science garus try to make some sizable machines which can be able to suck and filter or clean the polluted air so as to try to reduce this pollution thing? These machines can function in the same way the air conditioners operate, but specifically for air cleaning. If these machines placed in these heavily populated and industrialised cities they can help reduce polluted air before it escapes to the atmosphere.Am sure it is this same polluted air which slowly destroys the Ozone layer which in turn brings about abnormal climatic changes which can have impact on extinction of some organisms and even affect our immune system status.
Hope my suggestion is clear and straight forward.
Yours,
Jastins JM Gondwe.
Thanks for stopping by and reading
Large filters for air cleaning is an interesting idea.
You’re right, as the population grows, pollution is going to be a huge problem. I’m also hoping that as technology advances, we’ll find ways to eliminate all the poison we’re injecting into Earth.
