Was going to save this to commemorate Smartkit’s 200th brain teaser/puzzle post, but figured why not show it now?
It’s a small Powerpoint file; you’ll have to download and run on your computer to play, but it’ll be worth it though. Make sure to turn your sound on.
Happy Halloween ![]()
Here is smartkit’s 1st Tangram puzzle. Tangrams were brought to America from China in the 1800s. The goal is to form a specific shape with 7 smaller pieces called tans. Napoleon supposedly kept his mind sharp with tangram puzzles while a prisoner on the island of St. Helena (ref: wikipedia)

OK, Get your thinking caps on- Here’s a great brain teaser Doug recently sent in:
There are 2 rooms that are completely isolated from each other. In 1 room, there are 3 light switches. In the other, 3 light bulbs.
How can you determine which light switch is connected to each light bulb if you can only be in each room ONCE?

Ian let me know about this challenging river crossing puzzle game. The graphics are well done, and the little animations are kind of amusing:
(To play, click on the image and then press the big blue button. Note the rules below!)
Here are the rules:
1. The raft can carry only 2 people.
2. The father can not be left with any of the daughters unless the mother is present
3. The mother can not be left with any of the sons unless the father is present.
4. The criminal can not stay with any family member unless the guard is present.
5. Only the father, mother, and guard know how to use the raft.
Click on the characters to move them on/off raft. Click the red control ball to send the raft across the river.
Couple of answer submissions are already in the ‘comment’ section; try to solve it first before giving in and looking!
Here is an earlier River Crossing Puzzle you can try to figure out.

ok, for those who thought the last couple brain teasers were too easy, let’s kick it up a notch
When asked how many nuts he had in his basket, a boy replied that when he counted them over 2 by 2, 3 by 3, 4 by 4, 5 by 5, or 6 by 6, there was 1 remaining; when he counted them by 7s there was no remainder. How many had he?
will post submitted solutions Monday, thanks

Recently spotted this video link on Cliff Pickover’s Reality Carnival (one of the few sites I regularly try to visit for some good brain food).
Not quite sure how this works…

Here’s Sprout, a really neat Flash puzzle created by Jeff Nusz of New Zealand.
One thing you’ll notice about the game is that there are no instructions- which to me has always been one of the hallmarks of an elegant puzzle. In any case, I’m curious to hear what you think. If these flash puzzle games prove popular, I’ll try to get some more on the site from time to time.
Thanks to Jeff for allowing Smartkit to host his creative & original game.
Warning: Spoilers below!!

By starting at the correct letter in one of the words below, and then taking every third letter, a quotation from one of Shakespeare’s plays may be formed. Can you figure it out?
so as to not spoil the fun, will reveal submitted answers in a day or 2, thanks.

A riddle poem:
I go, but never stir,
I count, but never write,
I measure, and divide, and, sir,
You’ll find my measures right.
I run, but never walk,
I strike, but never wound,
I tell you much, but never talk,
In my diurnal round.
What am I?

Is the length of the tabletop on the left any different than the width of the tabletop on the right?

In this optical illusion by Roger Shepard (”Turning the Tables”), the dimensions of the tabletops are amazingly the same!

Here’s a classic brain teaser: “At the close of last season, of the footballers of my acquaintance four had broken their left arm, five had broken their right arm, two had the right arm sound, and three had sound left arms.”
Can you discover from that statement what is the smallest number of players that the speaker could be acquainted with?
answers to be revealed in 2 days.
