Where is the Schoolboy?

July 23rd, 2008

It’s been 6 months since the last antique French hidden object puzzle card went up, so figured it’s time to bring another one out. Some of you may remember the Three Rabbits , or the Pain De Sucre (yes, I can hear the groans already :)

but the thing to keep in mind is that these very old puzzle cards probably inspired the slew of hidden object games that have come out in the last couple years. However, since each card is a piece of art unto itself, and since the puzzle is usually cleverly worked in (usually with a few decoys too), I actually like them more.

So- Where is the Schoolboy?

Received this in the mail not too long ago: Every day a man arrives at Central Station and a car is waiting to give him a ride to his office. One day, however, the man arrives 1 hour early, so he starts walking toward the office. At some point on his way, the car picks him up, and he arrives 20 minutes early to the office.

How much time did the man spend walking?

My whole is composed of twelve;

divide us into three and nine,

and you bring before you a dark and dreadful scene,

bloddshed and cruelty; man destroying man;

if you exclude the first three of us, the picture is even darker,

for now the brute creation is involved in the general misery;

but separate us into four and eight and what a change!

Now all is gladness and gayety. The air rings with jubilee and joy.

Can you figure this one out? If so, submit into comments below and will reveal on Friday, thanks.

A camel hair broker buys from locals and sells back to merchants. The broker never buys for himself, but upon receiving an order to buy, finds someone who wishes to sell, and charges 2 percent commission to each of them, thereby making 4 per cent on the transaction.

However, by juggling with his old fashioned balance scale that uses weights, he always manages to add to his profit by cheating!

Upon receiving a consignment of camel’s hair he placed the same upon the short arm of his scales, so as to make the goods weigh one ounce light to the pound, but when he came to sell it he reversed the scales so as to give one ounce to the pound short, and thus made $25 by cheating.

On one particular occasion, he makes $25 by cheating in the weight, as he buys a bundle of camel hair with a weight 1 ounce too heavy and sells with one 1 ounce too light.

In this case, how much does he pay for the goods?

If you can figure it out, enter your answer into the comments section below. Will reveal submissions in a day or 2. thanks

Kind of a long weekend here in the US, so figured I’d open up a contest for our regular readers: Come Monday morning, the person with the highest score on the smiley puzzle game (challenge mode) will get a free RUNES package.

Smiley puzzle is a lot of fun (although I still struggle getting past level 8!) It’s definitely a brain game, and exercises your pattern recognition ability, visual memory, mental flexibility, concentration, processing speed.

Going to clear the current high scores so we can start from scratch. Also fixed the database/page so that your name only appears once (with your highest score).

Update: Looks like Lola finished 1st, with Ladana a very close 2nd. Anastasia and Suineg weren’t too far behind in 3rd and 4th.

Lola, please send me an email (info@smart-kit.com) so we can arrange to ship out RUNES. Ladana, Anastasia, & Suineg: Good job too; if you’d like a free PLEXUS puzzle or Smartkit Sudoku, let me know and will send.

Hand Drawn Puzzle Game

June 25th, 2008

Very excited to present Poiser, a new puzzle game designed by Johnny-K and sponsored by Smartkit. The artwork is hand drawn, and the game engine models real-world physics. The goal is to stack the boxes on the board until you cross the line at the top. The first couple levels are easy and use only 1 box size. Later levels get much trickier, and throw different size boxes at you in random fashion. The stability of the board also decreases as you advance levels.

Here’s something a little different from what normally gets posted at Smartkit, and if you’re a movie buff, I think you’ll like this one:

There are 100 film references in the picture puzzle below; how many can you figure out?

[click on image below to jump to higher resolution]

To make it interesting, how about each commenter leave only 1 or 2 films per comment? [comments entered will go live immediately]

Thanks!

I think this one is a bit harder than earlier spot the difference puzzles we posted…

Will keep any submitted answers under wraps until Tuesday, thanks.

Another Car?

June 19th, 2008

A bit easier this time:

Once you get what the middle picture is for this one, use it again in Gray-T’s puzzle below (Mannekin Pis) and the answer should be clearer :)

Here’s a neat logic-type puzzle that we haven’t put up before; it’s known as an ‘ABC Puzzle’:

Place the letters A,B,C and 2 spaces in each row and column. Each row and column must contain that exact combination-kind of like sudoku.

The letters around the square indicate what must be the 1st letter to appear in that row or column. So the ‘C’ above the last column means that ‘C’ appears 1st in that column, so you know the 1st cell in that column must be a ‘C’ or a space.

Feel free to enter your answers in the comment section below. As always, will unmask in a couple days, thanks.
