Here’s a slightly modified version of an old brain teaser:
James: "Do you know, when the Jacksons married 18 years ago, Mr. Jackson was three times as old as his wife, and today he is just twice as old as she?"
Shirley: "Then how old was Mrs. Jackson on the wedding day?"
Can you answer Shirley’s question?
Was scrolling through the post archives, and came across this neat bit of info: How falling in love improves your brain.
she was 18 and He was 54
X=Mr.Jackson’s age 18 years ago
W=Mrs.Jackson’s age 18 years ago
X=3W
X+18=2(W+18)
X+18=2W+36
X=2W+18
-(X=3W)
0=-W+18
W=18
W=18 X=54
Mr. Jackson was 54 and his wife was 18. Now he’s 72 and his wife 36…
Let x = the age she got married.
Her current age equals x, the age she got married, plus 18, the years that have past since then. The man’s age is twice her current age. Thus:
2(x + 18) = The man’s current age
The man was three times the age she got married (3x), thus, 3x plus the years since then (18) also equal his current age:
3x + 18 = The man’s current age
Now simply solve algebraicly:
2(x + 18) = 3x + 18
2x + 36 = 3x + 18
2x + 18 = 3x
x = 18
The age she got married was 18.
18.
Mr = 3(Mrs)
Mr+18 = 2(Mrs+18)
Mr = 2(Mrs+18)-18 = 2(Mrs)+18
2(Mrs)+18 = 3(Mrs)
Mrs = 18
Mr = 54
So she married him at 18 years old, while he was 54. Today she is 36 and he is 72. It’s a little bit disturbing picturing a 54 yr old getting together with an 18 yr old…
18 years old (mrs jackson:18+18=36, mr jackson 54+18=72)
Mrs. Jackson was 18 years old on her wedding day. Consequently, Mr. Jackson was 54.
That was a pretty wide age gap.. =)

The answer is 18
he was 54 and she was 18
She was 18 and he was 54 when they married.
Mrs. Jackson was 18 on her wedding day ; Mr. Jackson was 54. (3X)
Today, 18 years later, Mrs. Jackson is 36 and Mr. Jackson is 72 (2X).
Not a very difficult puzzle, really.
funny..
18
Mrs. Jackson was 18 years old on their wedding day. Mr. Jackson was 54 years old.
18!
She was 18.
x = Mrs. Jackson’s age on wedding day
x+18 = Mrs. Jackson’s age today (18 years later)
3x = Mr. Jackson’s age on wedding day
3x+18 = Mr. Jackson’s age today (18 years later)
(3x+18)/2 = Mrs. Jackson’s age today
We now have 2 equations to solve for Mrs. Jackson’s age today.
(3x+18)/2 = x+18
x=18
Piece of cake.
She was 18yr when she married..
and her husband 3×18= 54.
18 yrs later she is 36 and he is 72 twice her age.
She would have been 18.
(At 18 she married a 54 yr old – 3 times her age. Now 18 yrs on, she is 36 and he is 72 – double her age.)
16 was how old the wife was.
48 was how old the man was.
On the Wedding Day, Mrs. Jackson was 18
Solution:
x = age of Husband on wedding day
y = age of Wife on wedding day
ON WEDDING DAY
x = 3y
TODAY
x + 18 = 2(y+18)
*solve*
THEREFORE
3y = 2y + 18
y = 18
** Do the math, and it will all add up.
18
Present day Mrs. Jackson: X
Present day Mr. Jackson: 2X
(2X – 18) = 3(X – 18)
2X – 18 = 3X – 54
36 = X
Therefore, Mrs. Jackson was 18 years old when she was married.
When they were married he was 54 and she was 18. 3×18=54
Now he is 72 and she is 36. 2×36=72
Mrs. Jackson was a just-legal 18 on her wedding day, and Mr. Jackson was a dirty old 54.
18
.
Let Mrs. Jackson’s original age be x, and Mr. Jackson’s original age be y.
3x = y
and
2(x+18) = (y + 18)
Subtracting the second equation from the first, we see that x = 18. Therefore Mrs. J was originally 18 years old, and is now 36; her husband was originally 54 years old, and is now 72. The original ratio was 1:3; the time interval added 1 unit to each side, shifting the ratio to 2:4.
18 yrs
He was 54 on the day of the wedding (today he is 72 and she is 36)…. Could the missus be a gold digger?
Mrs. Jackson as 18 years old when she got married and Mr. Jackson was 54 Years old. (Three times old). Today after 18 years, Mrs. Jackson is 36 Years old and Mr. Jackson is 72 Years old (Twice).
So, shirley do u have ur answer????
Mr Jackson was 54 years old and his wife was 18 years old, so 18 year after that Mr Jackson has 72 years and his wife 36 years old, wooow, i hope that they had a happy marriage.
Mrs. Jackson became Mrs. Jackson @ 18…
Yes, on the wedding day she was 18, and as Roman notes, Mr. Jackson was "robbing the cradle" : )
thanks to Daniel, Arvan, Mudid, Shawn, Mark W, Lykos, & Joe for providing helpful explanations (thought we lost you there for a while Joe, glad to see you back!)
I was in Italy for almost two weeks.
