Teenage tobacco smokers should be aware of the following findings from a recent study out of Yale University School of Medicine (Biol Psychiatry 2005 Jan 1;57(1):56-66)
- While nicotine is a short-term brain enhancer,
- Nicotine is very likely to be toxic to their still developing brain. In other words, it can prevent the brain from developing the way it normally should
- Tobacco smoking also causes lasting deficits in working memory (working memory is a major determinant of IQ)
This doesn’t even take into account the chronic and severe damage tobacco smoking does to the brain’s small blood vessels, which I’ll save for a later post.
