Pregnancy, lead exposure, IQ

A new study suggests that exposure to even small amounts of lead during pregnancy can stunt fetal brain growth and development, leading to lower IQ scores later on in life.

Common sources of lead exposure include:

  • tap water (especially from older pipes that contain lead)
  • lead dust arising from older homes (lead-based paints)

Dr. Stephen Rothenberg notes that current U.S. federal guidelines and CDC recommendations do not adequately protect people from brain damage related to lead.

These conclusions certainly come as no surprise. Just another reason why water should always be filtered…

With the recent recall of certain Martel toys that had been painted in a lead base solution, it’s no real surprise that lead exposure no matter how small could cause adverse problems.

    Still very alarming though…
