THE 111111111
“Don’t kill me”-22222222222 said,
As Clara raised her heel,
Upon the humble 3333 to tread,
As though it did not feel.
———————————–
“Don’t kill me-I will crawl away,
And hide me from your sight,
And when I come, some other day,
You’ll view me with delight.”
—————————————
The 22222222222 went and hid
In some dark and quiet place,
Where none could look on what he did,
To change his form and face.
————————————–
And then, one day, as Clara read
Within a shady nook,
A 111111111, superbly dressed,
Alighted on her book.
————————————-
His shining 44444 were dotted over,
With gold, and blue, and green,
And Clara owned she naught before
So beautiful had seen.

Has anyone noticed that the poem starts off with a strong ABAB rhyme scheme, and gradually becomes a ABCB rhyme scheme towards the end?
Nice job to those who got 3/4 words correct. To those that got 4/4, outstanding!
The 3333 was the hardest element of this puzzle, and I didn’t think anyone would get it.
Some of you came up with reasonably good fits, but ‘worm’ is the actual answer.
And if English is not your native language, double congrats if you got all 4! (very good, Hex!)
