Course of Empire: The Savage State
Starting today, and continuing throughout this upcoming week, we have a series of 5 interesting paintings by Thomas Cole called ‘The Course of Empire’ which we’ll be using for the daily jigsaws.
Cole used a passage from the poet Lord Byron to describe the works:
“There is the moral of all human tales:
‘Tis but the same rehearsal of the past,
First Freedom, and then Glory–when that fails,
Wealth, vice, corruption – barbarism at last”
from Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, stanza CVIII]
In each painting, a valley is viewed from a different angle. In all 5 pictures, there is one feature of the environment that remains constant-see if you can identify it ![]()
