One of the key concepts for preserving intelligence and brain power as you get older is:
Keep the pipes open.
In other words, make sure the blood vessels that feed the brain don’t get clogged and narrowed; i.e. atherosclerotic.
Blood = Life ( a concept that rings true more for the brain than any other part of the body), and the more clogged the vessels, the more you will choke and slowly kill your brain cells. A seemingly simple concept that very few truly appreciate.
So as your brain’s blood vessels get more clogged, your brain power will diminish. Luckily, there are hundreds of dietary & lifestyle measures you can take to not only prevent this from happening, but to also partially reverse the process.
Over the next several months, we’ll delve into these in more detail.

[...] For one, diabetes damages the small blood vessels in the brain, and eventually rots these vessels to the point where they entirely close off. When this happens, the brain tissue fed by the blood vessel dies (i.e. a stroke). The diabetic brain therefore frequently looks like Swiss cheese, with lots of little holes scattered all over the place. As you can imagine, a brain littered with many gaping holes does not work well. [...]
[...] As the vessels clog and narrow, blood flow diminishes to neurons, and they don’t work as well as they should. Memory, concentration, creativity, and problem solving ability all plummet. [...]

[...] As I’ve commented on in several earlier posts, the ability of your brain to function well is critically dependent on its blood supply. The better the blood supply, the better your brain will function as you get older. Avoiding atherosclerosis is incredibly important when it comes to maintaining brain power. [...]
