Ultrasound may injure fetal brain

A new study out of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicates that exposure to ultrasound waves disrupt migration of fetal brain cells and therefore impair normal brain development.

Interestingly, a study in 2001 also showed ultrasound examinations disrupt normal brain development.

Most obstetricians, however, seem to believe the benefits of medically indicated fetal ultrasounds substantially outweigh the risks.

I would definitely avoid the “entertainment ultrasounds”, those that offer high-resolution pictures of your unborn baby. In other words, avoid medically unnecessary ultrasounds. Additionally, when going for one that is medically indicated, make sure the technician gathers all the necessary information from the test as quickly as possible.
