Tuna enjoys the reputation of being a good brain food. Many pregnant women eat it, hoping it will increase IQ of baby. Nothing, however, could be further from the truth.

Our oceans have become so polluted, canned tuna is now considered dangerous for pregnant women. In fact, just today I’ve read that the Consumers Union has recommended that pregnant women abstain completely from it.

The problem lies in excessively high mercury levels found in canned tuna. Mercury is a powerful toxin that especially damages the fetus’s brain.

Interestingly, 1/70th of a teaspoon of mercury per year is enough to contaminate a 25 acre lake to the point of making the fish not safe to eat. A typical coal burning power plant gives off about 50 pounds of mercury a year (source: National Wildlife Federation).
